Did you know that there’s a microphone on the Phoenix lander? Well, there is, and ESA’s Mars Express orbiter relayed the audio from Phoenix as it was descending through Mars’ atmosphere. I believe this is the first sound we have ever heard from another planet. I can’t wait to hear more!

Eventhough initially it was decided to use the Mars Descent Imager (MARDI) which includes a small microphone, during decent of Phoenix, the decision was revised due to a potential threat to the safe landing of Phoenix. Later on Nasa gave a GO signal to the proposed activation of microphone. If activated, it could be a landmark in the history of Nasa for recording the sound from another planetary body. I am still searching for the result of the activation.
